3D Antarctica models

Today in Class 3/4 we looked at contour lines on maps of the local area and then looked at a topographical map of Antarctica to inspire our model making.

We discovered that Antarctica is a landmass and in the summer is not as round-shaped as in the winter due to the unfrozen sea. We also noticed that the edges of Antarctica are really steep and there are mountains in the middle of the island.

The biggest hill near HItchin is 165m whereas in Antarctica the centre of the continent is 4000m high!

The children then made a model of Antarctica using the contour map to help them. They did very well recreating the shape of the continent and the mountains.
