County Finals of the ESFA competition.

On Saturday 23rd November seven members of the girls’ football team went to Harvesters FC to play in the County Finals of the ESFA Primary 7 a side competition.

With no reserves to allow for substitutions, the girls had to play the two games in the group round back to back. The first game was against Oakmere who had some really strong attacking players. The girls made a good start and a long goal kick from Lauren put the ball over the defence and a great finish from Rachel gave WR an early goal. However sustaining the lead was much harder. The score was 1-1 at half time but without our usual defensive line working together Lauren was often left one on one with the attacking players. Oakmere’s strikers were very skilled players and despite Lauren’s unfailing effort and positive attitude the score by the end was 4-1 to Oakmere.

The second game against Manor Lodge, another strong side, saw an early goal against WR within a few minutes of kick off. Although everyone tried really hard, with Annabel dropping back to defend and Rachel seizing a great opportunity to strike the ball but hitting the post, WR failed to equalise before half time. Unfortunately our luck did not change and in the second half a penalty for hand ball was given and converted and Manor Farm went on to win 2-0. The two losses meant the end of the mornings football for the WR girls and an early exit home to warm up.

I would like to thank the girls and their parents who gave up other commitments to play for their school this weekend. The girls should be praised for their positive attitude and effort they put in for the team. We now move forward and look to our next game in the Wix competition which we hope to play before Christmas.
