Eruptions and volcanoes

This afternoon Oak class were lucky enough to carry out some “in the moment” planning. This is a wonderful aspect of the EYFS framework that enables us to capture the interests of the children in the present moment, so literally being led by something that sparks their curiosity. In this case, a member of Oak asked Mrs Kholodenko this morning if she had seen the underwater volcano and then after several other children became animated by the conversations Oak decided to devote their afternoon whole class input time to the underwater volcano eruption that happened last week and do some associated learning.

We started by looking at some satellite images of when the eruption happened and then spoke about what happened afterwards.

The class did an experiment that showed how hot water rises to the top – it can be found here if you fancy having a go at home: Underwater Volcano For ages 3-8 ⋆ Raising Dragons

We then finished off by watching Disney’s Lava story, which features a beautiful song and is based on a real underwater volcano off the coast of Hawaii. You can listen here: Disney Music – Lava (Official Lyric Video from “Lava”) – YouTube

The children were so captured by the song we had to watch it a second time just before home!
