First Prize at Emerging Writers Conference

Ten boys today attended a Creative Writing Conference at Redborne Upper School in Ampthill.  The day involved sessions led by Year 13 A Level English students and secondary school English teachers and each team of boys had a Year 10 assistant to offer support and encouragement.

The first session was ideas on how to create more interesting sentences using adverbs, adjectives, subordinate clauses, similes and metaphors.

They then had a Found Poetry session which was a completely new concept to them.  They thoroughly enjoyed creating poems from extracts of Private Peaceful, James and the Giant Peach, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, War Horse, The Hobbit and many more books.

The final session really got their creative juices flowing and their competitive streaks took over.  Each team of five boys had to design a new chocolate bar and then write a speech to present their new design to a panel of executives from a chocolate company.  Their speeches needed to be detailed, exciting and persuasive.  Out of seven teams taking part, our teams came first and second.  The winning company was called Sensations and their chocolate bar 'Chocolatte' which had a unique centre filled with Latte coffee really impressed the judges.

A truly inspirational and enjoyable day for our young writers.
