Growing potatoes in Oak and Ash

Oak and Ash class are growing potatoes again this year. Ash are growing the Rocket variety and Oak are growing a variety called Colleen.

The seed potatoes are being ‘chitted’ for two weeks prior to planting. This involved placing the seed potatoes on holes in a box to keep them steady, being careful not to knock off any small white sprouts. We had to place the ‘chitting’ box in a warm place in the classroom and we are watching the chits or sprouts for two weeks as they change colour and harden off. After two weeks in the light, the seed potatoes will be ready to plant.

The potatoes are in our curiosity cubes. Watch out for news on how they are progressing.
