Learning, growing and having fun in reception

We have been learning about the planets this week. We looked at some non-fiction books to learn some facts and read some stories. Our favourite story this week was ‘Dogs in Space’. Everyone worked together to make a picture about the story.

The children learnt about the stars and made some pictures of the constellations by spraying white paint and adding stick on stars. Everyone was covered in white spots where the paint had sprayed in the wrong direction but it was great fun!

The children helped to make the play house into a rocket and have dressing up as astronauts to visit and explore the planets. Next week we are off to meet the aliens!

Harvesting our potatoes was a bit disappointing but it gave us the chance to revisit minibeasts and discuss how creatures make their homes. The potato bags were a home to many minibeasts which scattered in all directions as the bags were cut open.

The beans are growing well having transferred them from pots into the ground. No mighty beanstalks to climb yet but at least they have not been eaten by the slugs and snails, unlike our poor sunflowers!

The ‘Painted Lady’ caterpillars have changed into chrysalises and now we wait for the transformation into butterflies. We really hope they wait until Monday but have put some sugar water in the bottom of their ‘Habitat’ in case!

Every week we practise all of the diagraphs that we have learnt this year. Our main focus this week was on ‘ar’, so make sure your child reads through the word list in their box.

Don’t forget from Monday all of the children will go straight into the infant playground in the morning and line up when the bell goes. All children should be in school by this time otherwise it is recorded as a late on the register.
