North Herts Athletics Competition

Having gained second place in the Hitchin Schools athletics at Hitchin Boy’s School back in June, the 46 strong athletics team went by coach yesterday to take part in the North Herts round at Ridlins Athletics ground in Stevenage. There were a few changes to the original team due to illness and injury but the majority of the team remained unchanged.

William Ransom only qualifies as a ‘big school’ because of our 8 extra children (38 in an intake) so the children were competing against much larger schools such as Ashwell, St. Johns,St. Marys and Hartsfield.

It was quite grey and overcast with fine showers at the start and a large grey cloud over head for most of the afternoon, but the weather did not deter the William Ransom athletes. The sprints from years 2 to 6 were followed by the long distance, field events and finally the relays. It was very hard to anticipate where the school would be placed at the end. There were many terrific performances and everyone did their best so we were all delighted to find out that they had come 2nd overall. Hertsfield were the winners.

As usual our thanks to parents and friends who gave up their afternoon to drive over and support the team.

The next sporting event will be the long distance run, (just under a mile) at Princess Helena on 28th September. There is no age restriction on this event, anyone in KS2 can attend trials but only the top 12 children can participate. If you enjoy long distance running, get out over the summer break and practise!
