RE in Year 4

In Year 4 we focus on Sikhism and Christianity in RE. Autumn term saw the children learning about the origins of Sikhism, Guru Nanak and the main beliefs as well as where they worship. As part of looking at gurdwaras, we talk about the langar and what happens there, and more importantly what this practise teaches us about the faith. The experience was recreated for them in our activity studio where they got to sit and eat together, with scarves on and shoes removed, just like Sikhs would in a real langar.

At the start of spring term, they began looking more closely at Christianity, the stories it tells, the Ten Commandments and its ceremonies and celebrations. When Lent began, the classes started learning about the Easter story and all the symbols and meanings behind it. Even though these are taught in different terms, we are constantly looking back to what we’ve learnt to compare and contrast the religions to observe their similarities and differences. Below are some rocks and pebbles decorated with their symbol designs.

As we head in to summer term, these topics will conclude with a project about the religions in our neighbourhood and we have been lucky enough in the past to visit the different venues in Hitchin that serve these faiths and communities so the children can see all the things they’ve been learning about first hand.
