Reception explore the Moon

This week the children have been learning about the Moon, Neil Armstrong and about space travel. We looked at Google Moon which was fantastic and the children really enjoyed it. You can find it on Google Earth and then go to the picture of the yellow planet on the tool bar at the top of the page. We have started making some dressing up equipment and the rocket phase will begin next week.

The children learnt about Alan Bean who was an astronaut who enjoyed painting. He painted his impressions of the Moon and space, using photographs to help him paint accurately and ‘moon dust’ mixed with his paint. The children mixed some sand with their paint and using pictures from books and the Internet and painted their pictures in the style of Alan Bean.

In maths we revisited 2-D and 3-D shapes looking at their properties and then used them to make rockets.

Next week we will look at the planets and space travel. We are making rockets so the children who have not already got their boxes in school will need them for Monday.

You should have received spellings for the next three weeks. Many of these are words that have been tested before but are still incorrectly spelt on a daily basis. The results of writing the capital and lower case letters when told the letter name will come home on Monday so that you can see any letters which your child is still unsure of.

Well done to everyone who took part in sports day this morning. Pictures will be shown on the screens in school and I am sure that some will appear on the school website soon.
