Science in Year 4

In Science this half term, we have been learning about Electricity. We first started by finding out where Electricity comes from and the different ways it can be produced.

Did you know that there are two types of energy?

Non renewable energy includes coal, gas and oil. A lot of our cars, trains and planes use non-renewable energy. They are made by burning fossil fuels to create energy.

Renewable energy includes solar, hydro and wind energy. Wind energy is made when the wind moves the blades on a wind turbine. This movement creates wind energy which is converted into electrical energy.

We then looked at sorting electrical appliances based on whether they use mains or battery power. The pictures below show us working in groups to sort the appliances into the two separate groups.

We have also learnt about what is needed to make a simple complete circuit and this linked nicely to the work we have been covering in Design and Technology this term as we are designing and making our own torches.

In Science, we have also been learning lots of new vocabulary including ‘conductor’ and ‘insulator’ and what these new words mean. The children were then able to use this new vocabulary to investigate which materials conducted electricity and which did not.

We look forward to putting what we have learnt into practice when we produce our own torches later on in the Spring term and we will be sure to share this work with you once our torches are complete.
