Survival of the fittest!

In Year 6 Science, we are currently learning all about Evolution and Inheritance. Recently, we found out about adaptation and the idea of ‘Survival of the fittest’. We learnt about Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and the work he did studying finches in the Galapagos Islands.

This week in our Science lesson, Chestnut class have been trying this theory out for themselves by trying to identify the best ‘beak’ to help them acquire the most ‘seed’.

The children used different beaks (tools) to grab the most seed (sweets) in 30 seconds. They were very resourceful and found that, like the finches, certain beaks were better than others for different types of food collection. It was every man (and woman) for themselves!!
