Y6 dissect owl pellets!

We were lucky enough to be joined by a science teacher from HGS in Year 6 last week, to help us with our learning on ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’.

We created a food web for a barn owl to show what it may eat or be eaten by! We also looked at a taxidermy owl and learnt about how it is adapted for its environment.

The main activity was to dissect owl pellets. We learnt that an owl digests the nutrients it needs then disposes of the rest! Our task was to dissect the owl pellets, to look for bones, and then work out what it had for dinner by identifying the skull!

Lots of children were keen to get stuck in, (others less so!) either with their hands or some tools, to break down the owl pellets and identify the bones that they found. It was truly fascinating!
