Year 3 – Home Learning Spring Week 1

Dear Parents,

Please find below some online learning for Year 3 Maple and Elm Class.

We are aware some of the work set relies on the children having access to a device and the internet.  Although feedback from the home learning survey confirmed children have access to these, we do understand some children might be using shared devices and we know the order in which they complete these tasks may need to change to fit around your own individual circumstances.  We have uploaded sheets which the children can work on (if you have access to a printer) but if you are unable to print, the children can complete the tasks on plain paper just as easily.

Daily Reading

Log on to Fiction Express and choose one of the books. Aim to read a chapter a day and answer the questions. There is no need to record this in your reading record as we can see your progress online.

You can also read any of the books you already have at home. Record these in your reading record so we will be able to see how well you have read over lockdown.

Wednesday 5th January – English

In English this term, we will be looking at Myths.  Watch this BBC Bitesize What is a Myth. You can read lots of different myths here. Read the story of Pandora’s Box and answer the questions. The answers are provided so that you/your child can check their work at the end.

Friday 7th January – English

Work through this PowerPoint on Adverbs of Time.

Myths are oral stories which means that people tell the stories from memory without writing them down. Over the years, they can change as different people tell different versions. Look at this different version of the story of Perseus and Medusa.

Look at the cartoon on the worksheet below. Can you improve the captions by adding some adverbials of time? Remember, adverbials of time tell us when something happens. They can be one word or a phrase. Some examples are: first, suddenly, later, after a while, a short time later, at the end of the day. Add one to the beginning of each caption. If you would like a challenge, use page 2 of the worksheet and write your own caption, making sure you use an adverbial of time.

Friday 7th January – Spelling

Learn this list of spellings. Remember all the different strategies you can use to practise spellings.

telescope
television
telegraph
telephone
teleport
submerge
substandard
subdue
subhuman
enough
exercise

Friday 7th January – Science

We’re going to be looking at Plants in Science this term.  Make a list of all the things you know about plants.  Can you think of anything you would like to know?  Write your questions down – by the end of term, you might be able to answer them! How can we group plants together?  Watch this BBC Bitesize video. Watch the video ‘Worlds 10 most strange and  amazing plants’

Now can you imagine your own unusual plant?  Draw a picture of your plant and give it a name, then write a paragraph describing it.  Remember to describe all the different parts of the plant: flower, leaves, stem, roots, etc.

Friday 8th January – P.E

We are used to travelling about on our feet in lots of different ways – walking, jogging, skipping and running. Can you experiment with travelling on different parts of your body, in different ways? You might slide on your back or rock on your tummy. See how many different ways you can find.

Next choose two of the ways you found and perform one, then the other, to make a short sequence. Can you add a third movement to your sequence? Think about making the transition between your movements as smooth as possible.
