Year 5/6 Home learning – Spring week 1

Please find below the schedule for home learning for the rest of this week. If possible, try to complete some Maths and English each day and, if you have the time/resources, have a go at the foundation subject for that day. If you are unable to print the necessary sheets at home then please do what you can in the exercise book you took home.

Please try to stick to the timetabled days for the lessons, in order for you to stay in sync with what is being taught to children of essential workers in school.

We would also like you to ensure that you get some daily exercise – that could be a walk, run, scoot, cycle, Joe Wicks work out or dance around to Go Noodle – whatever you like!

You will be able to show off some of your work and catch up with your classmates and teacher each afternoon this week on Zoom, so please check parent emails for an invite.

You can find below the contact details for the teaching staff in Cherry, Chestnut and Rowan. Please only contact shared class staff on the days listed below and remember that we are also in school teaching, so you cannot always rely upon an immediate reply –

Wednesday PM – Geography

Start by going to this website which will give you a list of South American countries:

https://www.ducksters.com/geography/southamerica.php

Pick the South American country that is closest to your first name in the alphabet. For example, if your name beings with B, then research Brazil. If your name begins with D then research Ecuador as that is the closest letter. Compose a fact file about this country.  You can decide whether to present your work as a collage, an essay or a PowerPoint presentation. Your fact file must include:

  • Location
  • Climate
  • Population
  • Major cities
  • Flag
  • Natural landmarks
  • Manmade landmarks

These websites will also help:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/search?q=south+america

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/?s=south+america&post_type=primary-resource

Write a conclusion, deciding if you would like to visit this country and explaining your reasons.

Thursday PM – RE

Exploring mindfulness and gratitude

You will need: a clean empty jar or container, some materials to decorate it, paper, scissors and pen.

First of all, decorate your jar in any way you like: with glitter glue, wrapped in paper or decorated with Sharpies. Include the word gratitude in your design.

Decide on a suitable place for it to be located, perhaps near where you do your school work.

Take a sheet of paper and cut it in to squares of roughly the same size and store them underneath the jar.

Keep one square and write today’s date on one side. On the other side, write something that you are grateful for. It may take you some time to think, but that’s fine. Take some time to be quiet and just think. You could be grateful that it’s not raining today. Or that you have a favourite dinner to look forward to later. You could be grateful for the new art materials that you’ve used for this task. Everyone’s ideas will be different. When you’ve decided, write it down, fold your square of paper and pop it in the gratitude jar. Aim to add something different to the jar every day. If you’re feeling a bit down, empty the jar and read all your contributions.

Extension task: If you’d like to explore mindfulness further, here is a good place to look:
