Author Visit for Year 5 & 6

We were so excited to welcome the celebrated author – Lisa Thompson – into school. This visit was all thanks to the wonderful ladies at Next Page Books, Hitchin, who were kind enough to think of us! Unfortunately, Covid struck and the visit had to change to a virtual one. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time learning all about her and her fabulous books.

Lisa has written many hugely successful books and the children were really excited to learn all about her life, her family and her pets. She explained to the children that she loved writing books and had always wanted to be an author. She, in fact, started writing stories when she was aged 9-10. Lisa went on to tell us about some of her favourite books as a child and what it was about them that appealed to her so much. The children had so many fascinating questions that Lisa emailed us afterwards to say, ‘Can I say how brilliant your children’s questions were. I don’t think I’ve ever had so many original ones.’

The children loved hearing what different things inspired Lisa to write her stories and where she got all of her ideas from. The Treasure Hunters – her newest book – was inspired by her daughter’s recent Duke of Edinburgh trip. The short excerpt certainly grabbed us and the children were keen to get their hands on the copies they had bought.

At the end of the session, the children played a game where they had to decide whether the video games described were real ones from ‘the olden days’ or games that Lisa had concocted from her imagination.

A super author visit inspiring our young readers and writers.
