Designer Desk Tidies in Year 3

In D&T this half term, Year 3 have been learning about shell structures. We learnt that structures are objects constructed from several parts and that they can be any size, from huge bridges to table lamps and hat stands. We found out that shell structures are hollow with a thin outer coating. They are usually made from one material and often contain and protect something. Cardboard boxes and drinks cans are examples of shell structures.

We looked at lots of examples of desk tidies, evaluating the different shapes and materials. We then designed our own desk tidies, using different 3D shapes. We chose whether to recycle materials or to make new shapes using nets.

Once we had made our desk tidies, we evaluated our work. Some things went well but others were trickier than we had thought. We had to decide if we would change anything next time.
