Gardening Club

The children in Gardening Club have done some fabulours work with Mr Carmody, our site manager, this year! In Autumn, Year 5 planted bulbs in the tyres dotted around the school.

This inspired Mr Carmody to start Gardening Club and, in March 2022 Year 4 started off with planting potatoes; they have just had their first harvest!

Then, a small garden was created with a raised bed and they planted broccoli, beetroot, lettuce, tomatoes, chard, pumpkins, peas, runner beans and butternut squash.

Mr Carmody then applied for some funding which enabled him to buy plants, compost, tools, a bench and watering cans. Wickes donated some more tools and watering cans!

Gardening Club also recently entered a strawberry growing competition. The strawberries were put to good use as they then had a cream tea with scones; they enjoyed decorating them and are currently waiting to see if they have won! Update!! They came second and are waiting to find out what they have won.

Finally, last week they visited Hitchin garden centre. They completed a quiz and had a drink and biscuit before visiting Harkness Roses. They each chose their favourite rose based on the smell and appearance.

Pumpkins will be ready for October and Gardening Club will have a pumpkin carving competition.

Mr Carmody has loved running Gardening Club during lunchtimes and really enjoyed his first trip out with William Ransom children.
