The girl’s cricket was part of the Herts School games but was held on Tuesday 1st July at Welywn Cricket Club. With no opening ceremonies to hold up the proceedings the games were soon under way with slight alterations to the original program as one school had not turned up and another had got the timings wrong.
The first game was against Cowley Hill. Lauren lost the toss and William Ransom girls were forced to bat first. Annabel made a strong start with the opposition only taking 5 runs for 1 wicket! Rachel followed on 12 for 2 wickets, Ellen 5 for 2 wickets, Maddie2 for 2 wickets, Rhea 1 for 1 wicket, Rebecca and Catherine conceded 3 runs each, and Lauren 5 for 1 wicket which meant Cowley hill finished their innings with 185 runs for 8 wickets, fantastic fielding by William Ransom. The batting was harder as there were lots of wides and no balls bowled but although the score was slow to bulid Lauren and Catherine added 38 in their overs to make a final total of 268 for 1.
The second game against Wheatfields saw William Ransom lose the toss and have to bat first. Once again the runs built slowly with everyone keeping calm. The loss of 2 wickets for 252 was not a bad score but it was difficult to tell whether it would be enough. Once again the bowling was tight and the score was 247 for 3. Another win for William Ransom who went through as winners of the group to meet Ralph Sadlier a school that the boys had met in their semi-final last week.
With 2 ½ hours not playing the girls had to get back into competition mode. Winning the toss helped and William Ransom opting to field first. Ralph Sadlier was a strong side and scored 260 for the loss of only 1 wicket. A very slow start did not deter the girls and gradually the score began to build. If it had not been for Catherine’s magnificent score of 17 and some very careful batting to avoid losing any unnecessary wickets we would not have won with 269 for 1.
The girls had reached the final and mirroring the boys, Bengeo were our opponents. William Ransom fielded first and took 3 wickets for 254. Bengeo had made the most of every chance to score quick singles and their last player, a County player took 6 amazing 4’s. William Ransom went into bat but the bowling they faced was fast and accurate. As Catherine and Lauren who were the last pair went into bat 36 runs were needed. Catherine did well to score 3 sixes and no wickets were lost, however the game ended with 11 runs short and so the girls were runners up.
Well done to all of the girls who played some amazing cricket and fully deserved second place. On another day it could easily have been a win. The attitude and encouragement that the girls gave to one another was fantastic. They were all a credit to William Ransom and no more can ever be asked of a school team.
