We want our mummies!

Year 3 have been learning all about mummification. In Ancient Egypt, many people believed that, after they died, they would make a journey to the afterlife. Rich people went to great lengths to preserve dead bodies to keep them in good condition to make the afterlife journey. This process is called mummification.

Once we had learnt all about it, we practised our mummification skills on Barbie dolls. We washed our ‘bodies’ and removed the organs which we placed in canopic jars. We then dried our bodies using salt. The Ancient Egyptians used a type of natural salt called ‘natron’. We wrapped our bodies in strips of cloth and covered the face with a death mask before placing the mummy in a sarcophagus.
