Year 5 formal debating

As part of their topic on using persuasive language, both year 5 classes prepared for, and engaged in, inter-class debates, with the motions being chosen by them. We made sure that the topics chosen were contentious enough to provide a comprehensive choice of for and against arguments, and went about brainstorming and refining the best type of language to use (formal, and of course, persuasive!) They then learnt all about the formal debate process, and in teams of fifteen, (Yes, fifteen – no mean feat), allocated roles within that process.

After planning and practising, the debate took place, complete with vote at the end. The year 5 teachers were incredibly impressed that, despite some nerves, the children showed resilience and investment in the project. It was a fabulous opportunity not only to engage in public speaking, but also to think deeply about both sides of an argument.
