Hedgehogs Visit Year 1

Hedgehogs in Holly and Hazel Class

In English, the children have been learning all about hedgehogs. We’ve written instructions on how to make hedgehog houses, looked at the features of non-fiction books and drawn and labelled our hedgehog pictures. Last week Holly and Hazel class were very excited to receive a visit from Woodys Wildlife Rescue. We were visited by one of their volunteers called Kathryn who came with two hedgehogs they had rescued.

The hedgehogs had been rescued from places around Hertfordshire. Kathryn told us lots of things about hedgehogs and the children were surprised here with all the information they knew about hedgehogs. We listened very carefully and quietly as hedgehogs don’t like a lot of noise. It can scare them…

The hedgehogs let us stroke and feel their prickles. We could see their eyes, noses and paws. Kathryn explained that hedgehogs have their name because they live under hedges, they use their nose to find food and grunt like pigs. Kathryn handled them very gently. Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals so they like to sleep during the day and come out to play and eat at night.

We were even allowed to come up and touch the hedgehogs, they were more prickly than we thought.
