Holly Class Flying High!

In History this term, we have been learning about the pioneers of flight. To support our learning we went on a trip to the Shuttleworth Collection and had a visit from a real life pilot!

Mr Evans told us all about life as an Easyjet pilot and even showed us his pilot’s license. He told us about his favourite pilots, Alcock and Brown, who made the first transatlantic crossing in 1919. He also answered lots of questions from the children and we learnt lots more facts.

Shuttleworth

We spent all morning looking around the hangars with lots of interesting activities. We tried on different headgear from the first aeroplanes to a cosmonauts helmet!

We learnt about the race from England to Australia in 1934 and guessed where different planes would fit on a timeline.

We learnt about the importance of camouflage and looked inside one of the first passenger planes which only had 6 passengers – we even got our Shuttleworth passports stamped!

After lunch, we had a ride on a vintage bus which was a little bumpy. Finally, Mr Kershaw showed us his plane and everything you need to take with you on a flight. A busy but fun filled day!
