Year 1 athletics club

It is with great sadness that the 1st Year 1 athletics club has come to a close, after 6 weeks of exciting and energetic lunchtime sessions.

This half term, 17 Year 1s have worked their way round a number of fitness based athletics events, run and mentored by their exceptional Year 5 sports leaders. They have tried speed bounce, long jump, sprinting, relays, hurdles, javelin, long distance running and skipping for half an hour each Thursday lunchtime.

They have shown enthusiasm, resilience, hard work and have put themselves out there in trying new things; building their fitness, stamina and self esteem.

A big thank you also needs to go to the army of Year 5 sports leaders who give up their time each week to support and run the club, mentoring and supporting their young friends. It has been lovely to see the two year groups forming a close bond and seeing some of the older children grow in their new roles. They will make some fantastic Year 6 leaders next year, I am sure of it!

Next half term the other half of Year 1 who have signed up to the club get their go and we look forward to seeing what skills they have. If they are as enthusiastic and sporty as this bunch then I’m sure (as one Year 5 said today) “We have some Olympic champions in the making!”

Well done to everyone that has taken part – I have loved running this for you!
