Year 3’s pencil cases are sew lovely!

Year 3 have been working hard to plan, make and evaluate their own pencil cases. They began by looking at pencil cases that already exist and discussing their features.

The children all agreed that the most important function of the pencil case was that it could hold a pencil and some other items of stationery. In our pairs, we carefully made notes about different ways of opening and closing our pencil cases and different joining techniques such as stitching and gluing.

We talked about some key safety rules before we practised 3 different types of stitch – back, running and whip stitch.

We then practised sewing on a button, before we drew a design for our own pencil cases. We thought carefully about who our pencil case would be for – the user – and how this might effect the decisions we made on their behalf.

We planned the steps we needed to follow to create our pencil. Then, selected the resources we would need. We began by selecting our template and cutting out the fabric before getting to work using all the skills we had practised.

All our products were so different! We always look to improve our work and so we reflected on our learning and evaluated the products we created.
