Year 5 DT Project – Automata Toys.

Year 5 have been busy in the past few weeks, designing, making and evaluating moving toys, using a cam mechanism.

Their brief was to make a moving toy depicting an endangered animal, that the World Wildlife Fund could sell to raise funds. They considered its sturdiness, visual appeal, and safety for small children.

We firstly had fun researching the animals and their movements, and then decided how best to depict this movement using a cam and follower. Children showed great enthusiasm and patience in refining their designs as they built them, and the results were some smooth moving, original and very cute designs!

Children then went on to evaluate their toys by looking back at the design criteria and thinking critically about what worked and what they might do differently next time.

This was a challenging topic and the Year 5 teachers were extremely impressed and proud of all the children, for the resilience and creativity they demonstrated.
