The treaty between Guthrum and Alfred the Great.

We are coming to the end of our Viking unit in Year 5 – what a lot we have learnt about the constant battle for power between the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings!

We have been using some primary and secondary sources of historical evidence this week, through looking at a copy of the original signed treaty between Viking Guthrum and Alfred the Great (and it’s translation as unfortunately the staff’s knowledge doesn’t extend to old English or Latin!)

To really get our heads around this tricky document, we picked out a few key negotiation points that these two great leaders decided upon. We role played the parts, discussed what the different points meant, each side arguing for what was right for their people and concluded with how the agreement was considered fair for both parties.

Year 5 really got into this! We definitely have some strong negotiators and leaders in the making! Now roll on the Tudors next term…
