The Great Fire of Year One – Holly Class

Year One went back in time to September 1666. We started the day by baking some soda bread, using bicarbonate of soda instead of yeast. We kneaded and shaped the dough.

We then recreated the streets of London with our Tudor houses. The houses were close together and the wind was blowing just like it did in September 1666. We used a fire break to show how they tried to stop the fire, which was very effective. The children enjoyed singing ‘London’s Burning’ as they watched their houses burn!

The children then pretended to be Samuel Pepys and wrote a diary entry about their experience.

In the afternoon, the children created some Fire of London art and finished the day rebuilding London out of bricks.

The children enjoyed their day in 1666 and certainly all looked the part in their costumes!
